My story

Real life. Real questions. God plants questions like seeds that grow and grow.

Childhood questions.

Stuttgart, Germany, 6 years old. Our Jewish neighbor, why was she in a concentration camp here 17 years ago?

Dachau concentration camp, 7 years old. Who are the Jewish people and why did other people do this to them?

Young adult questions.

Moody Bible Institute, 19 years old. Why are you Christians always killing us Jews? Christians kill Jewish people?

Why do Jewish followers of Jesus read this Bible so differently than I ever hear in church? Why did I never see that the New Testament is as Jewish as the Old?

Adult questions.

Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, mid-30s. Why did ancient Rabbis and Church Fathers, mortal enemies, agree on one thing only; you can be Jewish or follow Jesus, but not both? Why did they both try to make extinct the kind of people in the New Testament story, Jewish followers of Jesus?

If I survive this cancer, will it mean that I am supposed to

be here? Why now would I ever say more than I know, or less than I believe?

Question-driven life.

I am driven by the questions God places in my life. A follower of Jesus since childhood, I equip people to see that God is interested in their life, where they are. The death of my father in the Vietnam War when I was 10, a decade as an Air Force navigator traveling the globe, and a battle with cancer, convince me that there are problems in paradise but also joy in hard places; life is complicated. Come join me on the journey with God’s book.

I live in Woodstock, CT with my wife Anna, our dog Shuggi, and cat Louie. We have two married daughters and 5 granddaughters—living in New England—who keep us laughing, a lot!
